New Luxury - designer laces and curtains

Bobbin lace was first produced in Venice in the 16th century, when it changed hands for astronomical prices and was a luxury item worn only by the princes of the church and nobility. Prices dropped somewhat in the 18th and 19th centuries, as lace-making by machine began to spread, most successfully in the shape of the Leavers and bobbinet machines. A combination of lack of demand and rising wage costs then started to harm the industry’s profitability, which is why production shifted in the 1930s to the manufacture of such consumer items as gas mantles and hair nets. A turning point in the openwork-textile industry came in 1948, with the first warp knitting loom developed by Karl Mayer, which continues to be the undisputed world leader in this field.

A booming new trend at the top end of the market

The term “luxury”, in its classic sense, refers to high, consistent quality based on top-grade materials and unique designs – a definition that applies particularly well to the manufacture of laces and curtains.
